Why is composting important?
Composting benefits both the environment and our community.
-
Reduces landfill waste - Green waste makes up a significant portion of landfill volume. Composting helps divert valuable material and extends landfill life.
-
Reduces greenhouse gas emissions - When material decomposes in a landfill, it can generate methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting helps prevent those emissions.
-
Improves soil health - Composts green matter, improves water retention, and supports healthier plant growth.
-
Supports local agriculture - Locally produced compost reduces dependence on imported soil products while supporting Maui's circular economy.
Is your compost safe?
Yes. We take compost quality and safety seriously. Our composting process follows industry best practices designed to reduce pathogens and create a stable, beneficial product for landscaping, agriculture, and home gardens. In addition, our products contain no biosolids and no food waste. Our compost is also independently tested through the U.S. Composting Council's Seal of Testing Assurance (STA) Program, providing transparent, science-based analysis of key quality characteristics and helping ensure a consistent, high-quality product.
Does your compost contain weed seeds?
Our composting process is managed to achieve temperatures designed to significantly reduce weed seeds and pathogens. While no natural compost product can guarantee the complete elimination of every seed, properly managed composting greatly reduces the likelihood of weed growth compared to uncomposted green waste.
What are pathogens and why does composting matter?
Pathogens are microorganisms that can potentially cause disease in plants, animals, or people.
Proper composting generates sustained high temperatures that help reduce pathogens and create a safer, more stable finished product. This is one reason why professional composting is so important compared to simply piling green waste in a backyard.
Does your compost contain biosolids?
No. Hawaii Organics Compost products are made from locally sourced green waste and do not contain biosolids.
Do you use food waste?
No. Our products are made from green waste materials and clean feedstocks. We do not accept or process food waste.
Why are there sticks or wood pieces in the compost?
Because our compost is made from real Maui green waste, you may occasionally find small wood fibers, bark, or natural plant material. These materials are part of the matter that contributes to long-term soil health and will continue to break down over time.
How are you handling Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB)?
Hawaii Organics Compost is committed to helping prevent the spread of Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) and works closely with applicable state guidance and best management practices.
